Davangere : Davangere (Kannada: ದಾವಣಗೆರೆ) is a city in the Indian state of Karnataka. It is the administrative headquarters of Davangere District. The city is located on NH4 (National Highway 4) at a distance of about 265 km from the state capital of Bangalore. Davangere became separate district in 1997; it was separated from the district of Chitradurga. Previously known for its cotton mills, it is a fast developing city of Karnataka. There was a time when the city was called Manchester of Karnataka due to its excellent quality of cotton produced in its cotton mills and hand looms. Geography Davangere is surrounded from Chithradurga,Bellary,Shimoga & Haveri districts. Davangere is at the center of karnataka 14° 28’ latitude, 75° 59’ altitude & 602.5 mts (1984 ft)high from Sea level, Davanagere district receives average annual rainfall of 644.0 mm.[3] Davanagere lies in the Bayalu Seeme or the Maidan region on the Deccan Plateau. The district is bounded by Shimoga District, Haveri District, Chitradurga District, and Bellary District Davangere District includes following Taluks.
Attractions: Bathi Gudda is situated 4kms from Davangere city towards harihara, from the top of this hill city looks beautiful. Beside this hill Bhadra sugar factory & Bathi lake are situated. you can even visit the Davangere Dairy located in Bathi, which supplies milk to Davangere & Chithradurga district. Kondajji is situated around 12kms from Davangere city. Its a major scout & guides camp for south India which is named in the commemorance of Kondajji Basappa. In kondajji there are 3 hills, a lake & boating is available. Soole kere (Shanthi Sagara) near Davangere, is a major water supply source and also second largest pond in Asia. It was built by namesake Princess Shanthi during 12th century. Now it is a water source for both drinking and agriculture. [5] There is a temple dedicated to Lord Siddeshwara near the lake. An Aqueduct designed by Sir M Vishweshwariah is also a major tourist attraction. University A new University has been established in 2008 which is named as 'Davangere University' located at tolahunase an out skirt area of Davangere. Business Davangere town is a major trading center of Karnataka state. Its Location in the very MID of the State makes it suitable for trading. The surrounding hinterland provide support to business at Davangere. Crops like Rice, Arecanut and Cotton are traded here[7]. There are many rice mills making puffed rice and beaten rice in and around this town. Davangere was famous for textiles, with the DCM (Davangere Cotton Mills) brand being famous in India. The Other Cotton mills which existed till date are Anjaneya Cotton mill, Ganesh Mill, Siddeshwara Cotton Mill. Davangere was a major cotton textile exporter during the 1960s till the 80s. But most of the mills were shut down during the 90s and currently the major agro-industrial activity around Davangere revolves around Rice and Sugarcane, with a number of sugar mills in and around this area. The Shamanur Sugar Mills situated in the Dugavathi village near Davangere is a Major Industry in Davangere. Many of the rice Mills are established in the Industrial area near the Bye Pass Road. Davangere has a big Garment and clothing Shop i.e. B.S.Channabasappa and Sons. This is a big garment shop of the city with its branches spread all over the city. Sports Davangere houses major Cricket and Football Clubs which provides bulk of opportunities to youngsters of this locality. R Vinay Kumar from Davangere is a famous cricketer who plays for Karnataka's Ranji Trophy Cricket Team as leading pace-bowler and also he use play for Royal Challengers IPL. Davangere is also famous for the weight lifting athletes.K.Gangappa & Akram basha represented India in International stage.Many others also have brought fame in many National and Internetional level sports meet. The city is also famous for Bodybuilding.Every year 4-5 state level competitions are held here.There are many gyms,mainly Stadium gym,World gym,Golds gym,Bulls gym,Buldo gym,Dongey park gym,Beerlingeshwara gym,Rocky gym & Beereshwara gym.
R Vinay Kumar who has been performing consistently at domestic level and in the Indian Premier League is now listed in the 15 member Indian squad which would be flying to the West Indies for the Twenty 20 World Cup 2010. and now he is selected to Indian cricket team as a medium fast bowler |
